Pdf Summary
The Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation scale (NOSE) is a questionnaire that assesses the impact of nasal obstruction on a person's quality of life. In this study, the researchers aimed to adapt and validate the German version of the NOSE scale (D-NOSE). The adaptation process involved forward and backward translation of the original English version of the NOSE scale. The D-NOSE was then administered to patients undergoing functional septorhinoplasty before surgery and at various postoperative time points. Healthy volunteers served as controls.

The results showed that the D-NOSE had good internal consistency, inter-item and item-total correlations, and test-retest reliability. The construct validity of the D-NOSE was confirmed by its good correlation with a question from the Rhinoplasty Outcome Evaluation questionnaire. The D-NOSE also demonstrated excellent discriminant validity by distinguishing between patients and healthy controls. Additionally, the D-NOSE showed high sensitivity to identify clinical changes due to the surgery, indicating good responsiveness.

Overall, the researchers concluded that the adapted German version of the NOSE questionnaire is a suitable tool for assessing the impact of nasal obstruction on the quality of life of German-speaking patients. The D-NOSE demonstrated good validity, reliability, and responsiveness, consistent with the original version of the questionnaire. However, study participation was low, resulting in a return rate of 57%. Nonetheless, the D-NOSE was well-received by the participants who completed the questionnaire without any difficulties.
