This self-instructional activity was conducted through electronically mediated learning methods.
Target Audience
Dentists currently active in dental sleep medicine planning to take the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM) examination, and those interested in updating their general knowledge of the dental sleep medicine literature.
Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this lecture, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the physiology of sleep, medical consequences and co-morbidities;
  • Comprehend SDB and sleep testing in order to effectively manage patients;
  • Overview of evidence-based alternatives for treatment of SDB;
  • Understand the standards for screening, treating and managing adult SDB patients;
  • Comprehend practice guidelines and treatment protocols for SDB therapy with MAD;
  • Overview of TMD examination, bite acquisition and TMD side effects;
  • Understand MAD design, physical features and function;
  • Comprehend the assessment of effectiveness and titration of MAD;
  • Management and long-term follow up of patients with MAD therapy;
  • Understand breathing disorders of sleep in children and adolescents;
  • Management and long-term follow up of patients in MAD therapy; and
  • Comprehend occlusal effects of MAD for OSA
