Overview

Screening for temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) is an important component of a comprehensive examination for oral appliance therapy (OAT). Once identified, it is the responsibility of the dentist to share all findings with the patient and strategize management in light of known affects associated with OAT. In these videos, principles of a comprehensive screening, examination, conservative interventions and referral protocols are clearly outlined and demonstrated.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this series of video demonstrations attendees will be able to:

  • Distinguish joint and muscle pain;
  • Screen for pre-OAT temporomandibular joint and associated muscle dysfunction;
  • Evaluate a posterior open bite;
  • Apply conservative joint and muscle treatments; and
  • Identify patients that could benefit from licensed physical therapist interventions.
Target Audience
Dentists screening or treating patients with sleep-related breathing disorders.
