Overview
As the 2024 Dental Research Award cycle approaches again, this webinar will highlight the experiences of previous awardees as they crafted their applications, applied for the award and implemented their research studies. This webinar will also feature new and interesting findings from these funded dental sleep medicine research projects.

Speaker Bio
David S. Binder, DDS has been an active member of the sleep medicine community since 1998. As a clinician educator he participates in the education and training of fellows in the sleep medicine program. He has participated as an active clinical member with the research faculty at the Integrative Sleep Medicine Program of the ISMMS in a range of studies in the diagnosis, treatment and outcomes of obstructive sleep apnea, have received grant funding from the Association of American Dental Sleep Medicine to optimize treating patients with OSA with oral appliances. 

Carlos Flores Mir, DDS, MSc, DSc serves as a tenured Professor at the University of Alberta and is the Graduate Orthodontic Program Director and Director of Graduate Studies - School of Dentistry. He works part-time as an associate orthodontist at a private practice. He also serves as an associate editor of two major Orthodontic peer-reviewed journals and has been a Qualified Dentist by the AADSM since 2021. 

Geoffrey E. Gerstner, DDS, MS, PhD holds a BS in Zoology with Minors in Chemistry and German. He subsequently enrolled in a dual MS-DDS degree program at UCLA, where his graduate work focused on developing an animal model of Tardive Dyskinesia. After completing the DDS and MS, he pursued graduate training through an individual NIH Dentist Scientist Award. He studied Orofacial Pain management and he obtained a PhD in Neuroscience, during which time he did comparative chewing studies of mammals. He has studied chewing in over 300 species. Dr. Gerstner's current research focuses on the motor control of chewing, and on clinical studies related to obstructive sleep apnea. He is funded by the AADSM to study the efficacy of consumer products in home sleep apnea screening and assessment. Dr. Gerstner is Director of the Sleep Apnea Clinic at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, and his faculty practice is limited to treating obstructive sleep apnea. He is also Director of the Mini-Residency in Dental Sleep Medicine, which is AADSM accredited and a university-based version of the AADSM Mastery program. His extra-curriculars including hiking, playing the piano, coaching track and field and reading. 

Nelly Huynh, PhD is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral Health Department, at the Université de Montréal and the CHU Sainte - Justine Research Center. Her research laboratory is dedicated to clinical research focused on dental sleep medicine (sleep bruxism, oral appliances) and sleep medicine (sleep apnea) from childhood to adulthood. Nelly completed her PhD in Montreal on sleep bruxism. This was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in OSA and imaging, in addition to pediatric sleep disorders at Stanford University, and training in epidemiology, and global health at the World Health Organisation in Geneva. She has over 50 peer-reviewed published articles in the field of sleep medicine and dental sleep medicine.
