Overview
Has there been something in dental sleep medicine that you wanted to research, but you just don’t know where to begin? Are you interested in being a part of research studies that could advance the science of DSM? Join this expert panel of researchers to learn about the ways that you can be more involved in research, ranging from participating in studies, collaborating with researchers and even applying for NIH funding.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this lecture, participants will be able to:
Understand the basics of how to begin to conduct clinical research;
Explore potential avenues for involvement in dental and craniofacial research programs within the NIH;
Understand the NIH’s sleep research programs and discuss opportunities for seeking NIH funding.
Speaker Bios
Subha Giri, DDS, MS
has over 15 years of clinical experience in collaborating with Sleep Physicians to provide Oral Appliance Therapy for patients diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea with concurrent focus in Temporomandibular joint disorders and Orofacial pain. Dr. Giri is an Assistant Professor of Dentistry at Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. She completed her clinical fellowship in TMJ and Orofacial Pain Management from the School of Dentistry at the University of Minnesota and a M.S. degree focusing on chronic pain mechanisms. She has been a participant dentist with the National Dental Practice Based Research Network and has authored chapters in textbook, journal articles, and patents.
Veerasathpurush (Sath) Allareddy,
BDS, MBA, MHA, PhD, MMSc
serves as Professor, Brodie Craniofacial Endowed Chair, and Head of Department of Orthodontics at University of Illinois Chicago. His research interests include: practice-based research, health services research and policy, access to care, and cleft/craniofacial outcomes. Dr. Allareddy serves as the Director of the Specialty Node of National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (

. He serves as a member of the Rapid Assessment of Evidence Panel and Planning and Awards Review Committee of the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation. Dr. Allareddy is a strong advocate of TEAM science and has been successful in fostering research collaborations between multiple Universities and has published over 225 research articles in peer reviewed journals, presented over 250 posters at regional/national/international scientific meetings, and collaborated with close to 250 researchers affiliated to more than 25 different Universities.
Maria Therese Galang-Boquiren, DMD, MS
is a tenured associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Apart from teaching, she works in private practice and holds a hospital appointment at the John H Stroger Jr Hospital of Cook County. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and is completing board certification for the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Galang-Boquiren has received numerous awards for her teaching and research accomplishments. She is also very active in organized dentistry and reviews scientific manuscripts for various peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Galang-Boquiren has been invited to speak both locally and internationally.
Aaron Glick, DDS, DABDSM
is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Dentistry and Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He also works part-time in private practice. He is a Diplomate through the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and holds Fellowship credentials with Academy of General Dentistry and International Congress of Oral Implantology. Dr. Glick has been a member of the AADSM Scientific Committee for the past 3 years. He has been published in medical and dental journals and lectures nationally on dental sleep medicine and digital/software technologies.
Marishka K. Brown, Ph.D.
is the Director of the National Center on Sleep Disorder Research (NCSDR) and leads the science of sleep and chronobiology into innovative discoveries that improve health. Dr. Brown’s leadership and experience in partnership building helps sustain and expand this network, bringing the benefits of NIH’s scientific research into medicine and public health. Dr. Brown started her NIH career as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology Policy fellow in the Office of Strategic Coordination, located within the NIH Office of the Director. Brown earned her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, with an emphasis in Pharmacology and Neuroscience, from the University of Maryland-Baltimore, and afterwards pursued a fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania in the Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology, studying the role of the unfolded protein response in age-related sleep changes.
Greg Essick, DDS, PhD
is Adjunct Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Previously as full-time faculty, he oversaw the Dental Sleep Clinic, which provided the dental school’s venue for patient care, education and research in oral appliance therapy. Dr. Essick provided much of the school's predoctoral and continuing education in sleep medicine. He authors more than 120 journal articles and book chapters. Dr. Essick is a past chair of the AADSM Research Committee and Academic Dental Sleep Medicine Council. He served on Academy task forces to define an effective oral appliance and its therapeutic position. He co-chaired a task force to develop a position statement for the practice of DSM in North Carolina. He is a diplomate of the ABDSM.
