Overview

In this episode of Open AirWaves, Nadia Afzal, DMD and Shehzad Malik, MD lead us through an interesting discussion about the many therapeutic modalities that can be employed by both medical personal and dental sleep medicine providers to move a patient towards best outcomes. Reviewing three, real-patient cases on which they collaborated, the doctors give both their perspectives on the patients’ unique presentation and the combination of treatments that eventually managed their sleep apnea.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this podcast episode, attendees will be able to:

  1. Explore the benefits of a collaborative treatment approach from the dental, medical and patient perspectives
  2. Consider the incorporation of additional dental and medical therapeutic modalities in the patient’s treatment plan

Dr. Nadia Afzal is a dentist and Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. She is currently practicing in Bethlehem, PA in a practice dedicated to treating tongue ties and sleep apnea. She is affiliate-in-training with The Breathe Institute and a fellow with the American Laser Study Club. Her passion for treating airway health as it relates to overall health has placed her as a community leader. Not only is Dr. Afzal a recurring speaker at the teaching hospital of Temple University School of Medicine at St. Luke's hospital, she is also at the forefront of bringing about collaborative care in the Lehigh Valley.


Dr. Shehzad Malik is a board-certified cardiologist who currently serves as president of The Heart Care Group, an independent cardiovascular medicine practice dedicated to a patient's cardiovascular needs with a strong emphasis on prevention and wellness.  He also serves on the Board for the Foundation for Airway Health. 

Dr. Malik obtained his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania where he then went on to pursue a degree in medicine from St. George’s University College of Medicine. Shehzad returned to Philadelphia to complete his residency and cardiology fellowship at Drexel University.

Over the years, Dr. Malik has placed special attention to airway health as it relates to cardiovascular health and drawing correlations through his research at his practice. His hope is to change the standard of cardiac care by stemming our approach in preventative care.

Dr. Vicki E. Cohn concentrates her practice only on the treatment of sleep apnea and snoring. She is a member of the AADSM, AASM, ADA and MDS. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, past chair of the AASM Dental Assembly and on the Editorial Board of the JDSM. She works with the Sleep Disorders Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA where she lectures and helps train Sleep Fellows and international medical students/HMS in oral appliance therapy. Dr. Cohn has lectured for both dentists and physicians at other institutions as well, including Harvard and Yale Medical Schools. Prior to 2016, Dr. Cohn had a 30-year career as a general dentist in Chatham, NY, which included all disciplines of general dentistry along with dental sleep medicine. Since 2016, Dr. Cohn has maintained a private dental sleep medicine practice in Newton, MA.
