Overview
Patients who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) often find themselves intolerant to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Oral appliances used for the treatment of OSA may not always be efficacious as stand-alone therapy. In patients where an oral appliance results in less-than-optimal disease management, combining therapies may provide the best results. This presentation will demonstrate how concurrent use of an oral appliance with CPAP may maximize the advantages of both while improving therapeutic outcomes. Weight loss, positional therapy, medications, and surgical procedures will also be discussed as adjunctive therapies.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this lecture, participants will be able to:
  1. Identify situations in which combination therapy may be beneficial;
  2. List the non-anatomic or phenotypic traits that affect airway function;
  3. Explain how adjunctive therapies can contribute to the success of oral appliance therapy;
  4. Demonstrate chairside adaptation of the oral appliance and CPAP interface
Target Audience
Dentists screening or treating patients with sleep-related breathing disorders.
