Overview
Comorbid Insomnia and Sleep Apnea (COMISA) are often found in association, despite distinct features within a wide spectrum of pathophysiological and clinical phenotypes. Recent findings have shown that additional symptoms and risk factors (e.g., cardiovascular, metabolic) may have a significant impact on mortality rates. This lecture will explore the benefits of diagnostic and therapeutic cross-disciplinary collaborations to promote personalized care and best outcomes.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe COMISA features, pathophysiology and prevalence;
- Consider COMISA diagnostic and therapeutic challenges;
- Implement targeted screening with appropriate history taking; and
- Recognize dental therapeutic approaches to support successful management.

Speaker Bio
Miguel Meira e Cruz, DDS, MS, is currently the director of the Sleep Unit in the Cardiovascular Center of University of Lisbon, School of Medicine. He is graduated with a degree in dental medicine and completed his Masters in sleep medicine. Dr.
Meira e
Cryz obtained both the title of European
Somnologist-Expert in Sleep Medicine from the European Sleep Research Society and International Sleep Disorders Specialist from the World Sleep Society. He’s also an international diplomate of American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Prof.
Meira e Cruz is currently an invited professor of Tufts University, in Boston, USA, in
São Leopoldo
Mandic, Campinas,
Bahiana School of Medicine and Public Health, Salvador, Brazil and in
CESPU, Porto, Portugal where he teaches sleep medicine and dental sleep medicine. His teaching focuses on developing basic and clinical research with a main focus on sleep disorders and their
cardiometabolic correlates. He is the author of several books, book chapters, articles in peer reviewed journals with impact factor within sleep, sleep medicine and related dental aspects of such fields.
