Overview

This lecture, recorded at the 2019 AADSM Annual Meeting, reviews sleep physiology and pathophysiology that is fundamental information for appropriately screening and treating patients with sleep-related breathing disorders.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this lecture, participants will be able to:

Discuss normal sleep parameters and the benefits of healthy sleep;
Differentiate between multiple causes of sleepiness;
Describe health consequences associated with sleep-related breathing disorders including co-morbidities;
Recognize signs and symptoms of sleep-related breathing disorders; and
Compare advantages and disadvantages of diagnosis and treatment options for sleep-related breathing disorders.

Target Audience

Dentists and chairside dental staff interested in screening for or treating patients with sleep-related breathing disorders.

Speaker Bio

Neil Freedman, MD is a practicing pulmonary disease specialist in Bannockburn, IL. Dr. Freedman graduated from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 1992 and has been in practice for 27 years. He completed a residency at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Freedman also specializes in critical care medicine and sleep medicine.
