Overview
This lecture introduces a method for systematically screening patients for sleep-related breathing disorders in a general dentistry practice. It provides an overview of the appropriate referral process, documentation needed, and the importance of patient education.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this lecture, participants will be able to:
  1. Develop a protocol for screening patients in a general dentistry practice;
  2. Refer patients identified during screening to a physician for diagnosis; and
  3. Describe the importance of educating patients about sleep-disordered breathing and its associated risks.
Target Audience

Dentists, chairside dental staff, and front desk staff involved in the screening and referring of patients with sleep-disordered breathing. 

Speaker Bio

David Schwartz, DDS is the current President of the AADSM. He started his general restorative dental practice in the Chicago area in 1988. He is a graduate of Indiana University and the University of Illinois College of Dentistry. Although he enjoys practicing many fields of dentistry, he has had a focus in dental sleep medicine for the last 22 years. He started the dental component of and is currently director of dental sleep medicine at The Center for Sleep Medicine in the Chicagoland area locations.

Dr. Schwartz has been a member of the AADSM since 1998 and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. He brings a wealth of experience to the dental sleep community, has educated dentists around the world on the benefits of dental sleep medicine and has served on several AADSM committees and task forces over the years.
