Overview

This lecture reviews a variety of oral appliances styles that can be used to manage sleep-related breathing disorders. It examines fundamental design principles that will prepare dental sleep medicine practitioners to provide oral appliances that are best suited for their patients’ individual needs.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this lecture, participants will be able to:

Understand foundational principles of device design;
Discuss interconnectedness of material, retention and extension decisions;
Recognize the significance of forces generated by propulsion mechanisms; and
Consider circular strategy for device design to maximize patient comfort, compliance and treatment success

Target Audience

Dentists screening and treating patients with sleep related breathing disorders.

Speaker Bio

Patricia (Trish) Braga, DDS, D. ABDSM, graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and established a multidisciplinary practice in 1983. In 2006 Dr. Braga entered the field of dental sleep medicine and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine in 2013. She began limiting her practice to dental sleep medicine in 2014 and completed the transition in less than a year. She chaired the Accreditation Committee, served as director at large for the ABDSM and participated on the Consensus Conference panel to develop, “Management of Side Effects of OAT for SDB”. She currently serves as Director of Education for the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.
