Overview
During this recorded panel discussion, DSM team members with medical backgrounds explore their unique contributions to the practice of dental sleep medicine and suggest qualifications for hiring medical personnel.
Objectives

Upon completion of the recording, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe potential contributions of DSM team members with medical backgrounds;
  2. List important skill sets to identify when hiring DSM team members with a medical background; and
  3. Recognize areas where current DSM team members may need additional training.

Speaker Bios

Ruben Avalos, LVN, CDP, RDA 
holds a BAS in nursing from Wayland University, and his clinical experience includes providing care to pulmonary compromised patients fully dependent on ventilated care. He is the Assistant Director of Nursing for a 120 bed tracheotomy and ventilator facility, and Director of Operations for Sleep Easy Dentistry, which dedicates itself to providing patients with oral appliance therapy for obstructive sleep apnea. Ruben is an RDA through UT Health, and has completed the certification program from the Texas School of Sleep Medicine & Technology for polysomnography. He is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), with completion of their A-STEP Accredited Sleep Technologist program. 


Sarah Conklin, LPN
obtained her LPN license from Grand Rapids Community College. Her nursing experience includes 13 years in healthcare focusing on memory care, rehabilitation, nurse triage and endocrinology with an emphasis on diabetes education and insulin pump management. 


Belinda Postol, RN
has been actively involved with her husband's dental practice from its inception in 1995. As the business manager, she is involved with all aspects of the practice. Since 2007, she has been intricately involved with dental sleep medicine, developing protocols and strategies for insurance, communication with sleep physicians, and consultations with patients. She has trained with dental sleep physicians around the country and brings both a thorough knowledge of obstructive sleep apnea and understanding of the medical arena. She has spoken across the country with the AADSM and university-based programs. In addition to working at the dental practice, Belinda had worked at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital on a part-time basis until her retirement in June 2019 after 31 years. She continues to expand her knowledge in the areas of sleep and medical insurance.
