Overview
This lecture introduces the common side effects of oral appliance therapy (OAT) and reviews appropriate remedies.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this lecture, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain common side effects associated with the use of OAT for sleep-disordered breathing
  2. Identify transient side effects and strategize remedies to prevent permanent changes and increase patient comfort; and
  3. Recognize potentially permanent changes to dentition, occlusion or TMJ and learn appropriate management strategies.
Target Audience
Dentists and chairside dental staff treating patients with sleep-disordered breathing.
Speaker Bio


Michael Hnat, DMD, practices dental sleep medicine and the treatment of TMD in McMurray, PA. His facility has been accredited by the AADSM since 2012 and he currently serves as Chair of the Accreditation and Professional Ethics Committees, as well as a member of the Academic Dental Sleep Medicine Council Steering Committee. As Clinical Assistant Professor at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry he teaches dental sleep medicine to the dental and hygiene students in their pre-doctoral program. He holds Diplomate status through the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and the American Board of Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine. His passion in this field is evident in his lectures and his standard of care with his patients.
