Overview
Given the strong association between sleep-related breathing disorders and temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD), patients using oral appliance therapy may experience muscle or joint symptoms at some point during the course of their treatment. During this recorded lecture, three experienced panelists suggest remedies for common treatment emergent TMD complaints.
Objectives

Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the importance of identifying pre-OAT signs and symptoms of TMD; 
  2. Identify patients who need TMD intervention before OAT;
  3. Identify non-OAT triggers for TMD complaints; and
  4. Suggest remedies for TMD complaints resulting from use of an oral appliance.

Dentists and team members treating patients with oral appliance therapy for sleep-related breathing disorders.
Speaker Bios

 

Subha Giri, BDS, MS has over twelve years of clinical experience in collaborating with sleep physicians to provide oral appliance therapy for patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea with concurrent focus in temporomandibular joint disorders and orofacial pain. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Dentistry at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Giri completed her clinical fellowship in TMJ and Orofacial Pain Management at the University of Minnesota and earned her MS focusing on chronic pain mechanisms. She has been a participant dentist with the National Dental Practice Based Research Network and has authored textbooks, journals and patents.   


Emily Kahnert, DPT, CCTT
is a Physical Therapist in the TMD, Orofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Medicine Clinic at the University of MN School of Dentistry. She completed her Doctor of Physical Therapy at the University of Minnesota, and her 15 years of clinical practice have been exclusively focused on treating TMD and Orofacial pain in multidisciplinary settings. She earned her Certified Cervical and Temporomandibular Therapist designation through the Physical Therapy Board of Craniofacial and Cervical Therapeutics (PTBCCT) in May 2019, and began PhD work at the University of MN studying biomechanics of the TMJ in Fall 2019. 


Alex Vaughan, DDS, MS
is a board certified Orofacial Pain specialist and co-founder of Virginia Total Sleep in Richmond Virginia. Having started his dental career in the front office, he was “insurance minded” from the beginning. Seeing the urgent need for dental sleep medicine and orofacial pain services, he co-founded his practice with Dr. Michael Pagano on the foundation of medical billing and cutting-edge technology. By combining electronic medical records and his billing expertise, Virginia Total Sleep has reduced patient costs by 90% all while maximizing revenue and case acceptance rate.
